Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Cut the Plywood

Cut the plywood into the following pieces:

  • 2 pieces of 22 inches x 16 inches for the front and back
  • 2 pieces of 16 inches x 10 inches for the sides
  • 1 piece of 22 inches x 10 inches for the bottom
  • 1 piece of 24 inches x 16 inches for the roof

Use sandpaper to smooth the edges of each piece.

Step 2: Drill Holes

Drill holes on the front piece for ventilation and on the bottom piece for drainage. Use 1/4-inch drill bits for the vent holes and 1/2-inch hole saw bit for the drainage holes. Make sure to space the holes at least an inch apart.

Step 3: Assemble the Box

Apply wood glue to the edges of the side pieces and attach them to the front and back pieces. Use screws to secure them in place. Then, attach the bottom piece using hinges so it can be opened for cleaning. Finally, attach the roof piece with hinges as well.

Step 4: Paint the Box

Paint the box black to absorb heat and help regulate the temperature inside. Make sure to use non-toxic paint. Allow the first coat to dry before applying a second coat.

Install the bat box at least 10 feet off the ground and facing south or southeast. Choose a location with a clear flight path and near a water source.
